Now, everyone knows that foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates make you fat. It's not rocket science to look at a bag of skittles and understand that they won't help get you lean. There is, however, a lot of bad information floating around about foods that are supposedly healthy for you and that support fat loss and muscle building, most either the result of the moron "brotritionist" at your local, commercial gym or the deep advertising pockets of the food industry. This being said, here are some of my least favorite foods and why they suck. The first, and likely most familiar problem with soy are its estrogenic properties. Soy has been linked sexual development problems, some types of cancers, hormonal disruption because of it's tendency to mimic the female hormone, estrogen, as well as negative effects on the thyroid, digestive system, sex drive, and even fertility. See, the soy plant contains natural phytoestrogens (naturally occurring in the soy plant) and toxic xenoestrogens (the result of processing). While reseach is still unclear on the degree to which phytoestrogens mimic estrogen, the xenoestrogens found in processed soy have been shown to contribute to many of the negative effects found above.
It seems to me that every time I stop into 7-Eleven, Arco, AMPM, or really any convenience store (and trust me, this isn't often since I rarely have to leave the car in Oregon, high five for gas pumpers) that there is a new energy drink that has come out. It makes me feel old when I recall the "good old days" when it was basically Red Bull and Rockstar, right before Monster eve came out. They were like the "Big 3" on the shelves, and energy drinks were just starting to become sexy, with everyone gathering around to compare the last time the needed to sleep. Naturally, I always won. Ahh, those were the days… Moving right along, sad to say it, but these energy drinks constitute some of the absolute worst things you can be drinking. Caffiene content aside (I am not against caffiene), the sugar content alone should be reason enough to avoid these drinks. They average around 250-400 calories, and these calories are mostly from sugar. Take a look at a few of the top contenders: Red Bull, 12 oz. 160 cal, 39 g sugar, 40 g carbs. Rockstar, standard can. 276 cal, 61.1 g sugar, [...]

I recently started reading Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma: A natural history of four meals," and it's quickly become one of the books that I make a point to talk to people about. Here's my quick introduction to this amazing and powerful book. So, here's a book I'm working on right now and recommend for everyone else to read: The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Talks about the food industry and the benefits of fresh, locally grown food over processed, industrialized food. Must-read, even for the non-hippie.
